Are you considering using SUS321 stainless steel for high-temperature applications? Most buyers are evaluating whether SUS321 is suitable for continuous high-temperature use, its welding stability, and long-term reliability. Understanding its true temperature limits can help avoid material failure and unnecessary cost increases.
Maximum Temperature of SUS321 Stainless Steel
SUS321 stainless steel (equivalent to AISI 321 / EN 1.4541) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel designed specifically for elevated-temperature applications.
Maximum intermittent service temperature: up to 870 °C (1600 °F)
Recommended continuous service temperature: up to 800–850 °C
Oxidation resistance limit: approximately 900 °C
These temperature limits are significantly higher than standard SUS304, especially in welded structures.
Why does SUS321 perform better in high-temperature environments?
The titanium in SUS321 combines with carbon to form stable TiC compounds, preventing carbon from combining with chromium to precipitate chromium carbide within the temperature range of 450–850°C. This effectively prevents intergranular corrosion, significantly reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion caused by sensitization after welding. It is therefore suitable for applications such as boilers, heat exchangers, and high-temperature pipelines where high resistance to corrosion and long-term stability after welding are required.
SUS321 Mechanical Performance at Elevated Temperature
Tensile strength: ≥ 515 MPa
Yield strength (0.2%): ≥ 205 MPa
Elongation: ≥ 40%
At elevated temperatures, SUS321 shows better creep resistance and thermal stability than SUS304, making it suitable for pressure-containing components exposed to heat.
SUS321 vs SUS304: Temperature Resistance Comparison
SUS321 is superior to SUS304 in high-temperature service because its titanium stabilization prevents sensitization (intergranular corrosion) above 800°C (1472°F), allowing it to handle continuous use up to ~925°C (1700°F), while 304's corrosion resistance drops, making 321 ideal for aircraft, exhaust systems, and heat exchangers where 304 would fail.
| Grade | Max Continuous Temp | Welding Stability | High-Temp Reliability |
|---|---|---|---|
| SUS304 | ~600–650 °C | Moderate | Limited |
| SUS321 | 800–850 °C | Excellent | High |
