310S Stainless Steel: High-Temperature Resistance and Performance Analysis
As a high-alloy austenitic heat-resistant stainless steel, 310S stainless steel exhibits excellent oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, and creep strength in high-temperature environments due to its high chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) content.
However, there is often confusion regarding the exact temperature resistance of 310S stainless steel in practical applications. Some claim it can withstand 800°C, others say 1000°C, and some even suggest it can endure up to 1200°C. So, what is the actual situation?
Temperature Resistance of 310S Stainless Steel
310S stainless steel can withstand temperatures above 800°C. When exposed to the range of 900–1100°C, its strength begins to decline, and oxidation gradually becomes apparent. Once the temperature reaches 1200°C, severe oxidation occurs, and the material essentially loses its usability.
The following sections provide a detailed analysis of 310S stainless steel's oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength.

Oxidation Resistance of 310S Stainless Steel
The oxidation weight gain curve of 310S stainless steel at different temperatures demonstrates that when the temperature rises to 1200°C, the oxidation rate increases drastically, nearly forming a linear progression.
Additionally, oxidation rate curves at various temperatures indicate that:
At 800°C, 310S stainless steel achieves a fully oxidation-resistant level.
In the 900–1100°C range, it still maintains oxidation resistance, but oxidation gradually accelerates over time.
Research shows that 310S stainless steel exhibits good oxidation resistance at 800°C, 900°C, and 1000°C. Over time, oxidation weight gain occurs at all temperatures, but the oxidation rate stabilizes. However, as temperature increases, the oxidation rate also rises. For example, at 1100°C, the oxidation rate is nearly twice as fast as at 1000°C.
High-Temperature Strength of 310S Stainless Steel
Based on long-term high-temperature creep rupture tests of SUS310S stainless steel, extrapolated stress values at 10,000 hours of rupture time are as follows:

σ800 = 33.3887 MPa
σ900 = 9.3864 MPa
σ1000 = 4.3351 MPa
σ1100 = 4.4269 MPa
For long-term applications, it is recommended to keep the temperature below 800°C, with an applied stress not exceeding 33.3887 MPa.
For short-term applications:
At 800°C, 310S can withstand stress exceeding 120 MPa.
At 900°C, it can endure 85 MPa.
At 1000°C, the maximum stress it can handle drops to 35 MPa.
Conclusion
310S stainless steel is best suited for continuous use at temperatures below 800°C.
Between 900–1100°C, it remains oxidation-resistant but experiences strength degradation.
At 1200°C, oxidation is severe, making the material unsuitable for practical use.
For short-term applications, it can withstand higher stress, but prolonged exposure significantly reduces strength.
