What is ASTM A240 316L Stainless Steel Plate?
ASTM A240 316L stainless steel hot-rolled medium and heavy plate (UNS S31603, EN 1.4404) is a low-carbon (≤0.03%) austenitic stainless steel plate containing 16.0-18.0% chromium, 10.0-14.0% nickel, and 2.0-3.0% molybdenum (to improve pitting corrosion resistance). 316L SS plate has a minimum yield strength of 170 MPa, tensile strength of 485-620 MPa, elongation ≥40%, and a PREN value of 25-27. It is widely used in chemical equipment, marine engineering, food and pharmaceutical machinery, and pressure vessels requiring superior chloride corrosion resistance compared to 304L.

As of December 2025, the standard specifications for ASTM A240 316L stainless steel hot-rolled plates (UNS S31603, EN 1.4404, No.1 surface finish) are as follows: thickness 6-20 mm, dimensions 1500 × 6000 mm, and a price of US$2800-3300 per ton (FOB China). Thin plates (4.5-6 mm) have a 5-8% price premium, while thick plates (20-100 mm) have a 3-5% price reduction. Large orders of 20 tons or more are eligible for a 6-10% discount.
