ASME SA688 Grade TP316 stainless steel U-tubes are typically supplied in annealed or Bright Annealed (BA) conditions. The straight tubes are cold-worked into the U-shape, followed by specialized stress-relief processing on the curved portion. These high-precision tubes are widely utilized in feedwater heaters, heat exchangers (including condensers and evaporators), as well as the chemical, petrochemical, and food processing industries, ensuring long-term operational efficiency and safety.

The outer diameter tolerance of U-bends in ASTM A688 shall conform to specification A1016/M. When the bending portion of the U-bend has a radius of R = 2 x D or greater, the tolerance shall deviate from the nominal diameter before bending by more than 10%. If it is specified to be less than 2 x D, the tolerance may be greater. The minimum wall thickness shall not exceed +20% − 0. The average wall thickness shall be 10% of the nominal wall thickness. The wall thickness tolerance in the bending area shall not be less than the value calculated by formula 4RT/(4R+D).
