What is ASTM A564?
ASTM A564 specification covers hot-rolled and cold-finished age-hardening stainless steel bars. Designed for operating temperatures up to approximately 315°C (600°F), it meets the stringent requirements of demanding working conditions where both high strength and corrosion resistance are essential.
Our ASTM A564 17-4 PH (UNS S17400 / Grade 630) is a precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel round bar. Its greatest advantage lies in its ability to achieve mechanical properties far superior to those of 304 and 316 stainless steels while maintaining good corrosion resistance. Following aging treatments such as H900, H1025, or H1150, its tensile strength can exceed 1310 MPa, and its yield strength can surpass 1170 MPa. This performance, significantly higher than 304 and 316 grades, makes it exceptionally suitable for manufacturing high-load shafts, valves, pump shafts, aerospace fasteners, molds, medical devices, and high-precision mechanical components.
GNEE supplies ASTM A564 17-4 PH round steel bars in diameters ranging from Φ6 mm to 450 mm. We offer a wide range of product forms, including hot-rolled, forged, cold-drawn, smooth-turned, peeled, polished, and precision-ground bars. These are available in various heat-treated conditions such as Condition A, H900, H1025, H1075, H1100, and H1150 to meet diverse strength and toughness requirements. Furthermore, we support saw-cutting, CNC precision machining, cut-to-length processing, and export-grade rust-proof packaging, enabling customized production tailored to customer drawings.

17-4 PH Round Bar Weight Calculation
The theoretical weight of 17-4 PH stainless steel round bar can be calculated based on a material density of 7.78 g/cm³ (0.281 lb/in³):
Weight per meter (kg/m) = Diameter (mm)² × 0.006115
Example: Round bar with a diameter of 50 mm:
Weight = 50² × 0.006115 = 15.2875 kg/m
17-4 PH Stainless Steel Rod Application
Mechanical manufacturing: high-strength structural components such as shafts, gears, sleeves, forgings, etc;
Hydraulic/Pneumatic: Cylinder piston rod, valve core, valve components;
Aerospace: aircraft landing gear parts, engine components;
Medical devices: surgical instruments, implants (must meet biocompatibility);
Chemical/Marine: Valves, flanges, and connectors in mildly corrosive environments (avoiding strongly corrosive media);
Electronic devices: precision structural components without magnetic requirements.

Possible alternative grades to 630 stainless steels
| Grade | Reasons for choosing 17/4PH (630) |
| 431 | 431 Has higher toughness than 17/4PH. Better availability in some sizes. |
| 416 | Free-machining martensitic stainless steel - better for repetition machining. Lower cost. |
| 316 | Higher corrosion resistance of 316 to resist more severe environments, but with much lower strength than 17/4PH. |
| 2205 | Much better corrosion resistance than 17/4PH, with a lower strength (but not as low as 316). |

FAQ
Q. How does the corrosion resistance of 17-4 PH compare to other grades?
A. In most environments, the corrosion resistance of 17-4 PH is superior to standard 400-series stainless steels (such as 410 or 431) and comparable to 304 stainless steel in many media. However, in certain highly corrosive chemical or marine environments, its pitting resistance is slightly inferior to that of 316L.
Q. What are the advantages of 17-4 PH over 316 stainless steel?
A. Its greatest advantage is strength. The yield strength of 17-4 PH can be more than three times that of 316 stainless steel. If an application requires both corrosion resistance and the ability to withstand extremely high mechanical loads, 17-4 PH is the better choice.
Q. Is 17-4 PH magnetic?
A. Yes, it is magnetic. 17-4 PH is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel; it exhibits strong magnetism in both the solution-annealed state (Condition A) and various age-hardened states (such as H900), unlike austenitic stainless steels like 304 and 316.
Q. What is the maximum hardness 17-4 PH can achieve?
A. In the H900 condition (aged at 482°C), 17-4 PH reaches its peak hardness-typically between 40 and 47 on the Rockwell C scale (HRC)-with a tensile strength exceeding 1310 MPa.
