Overview
Grade 409 is a ferritic stainless steel renowned for its excellent cost-performance ratio, primarily designed for applications requiring moderate corrosion resistance and good formability. It is characterized by a low chromium content (10.5-11.75%) and titanium stabilization, which enhances its resistance to intergranular corrosion and improves weldability. Unlike austenitic stainless steels, Grade 409 is magnetic and offers good thermal conductivity, making it suitable for high-temperature exhaust systems and general industrial applications where cost is a key consideration. It balances basic corrosion protection with affordability, serving as a reliable choice for non-critical corrosive environments.
Chemical Composition (wt%)
C ≤ 0.08, Cr: 10.50-11.75, Ti: 0.15-0.35, Mn ≤ 1.00, Si ≤ 1.00, P ≤ 0.045, S ≤ 0.030, Ni ≤ 0.50
Typical Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)
Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 415 MPa; Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 205 MPa; Elongation (A): ≥ 20%; Brinell Hardness (HB): ≤ 183
Core Advantages
Cost-effective with moderate corrosion resistance; titanium-stabilized to prevent intergranular corrosion; good formability and weldability; magnetic with excellent thermal conductivity; suitable for high-temperature service up to 650°C; low nickel content reduces material cost.
Applications
Automotive exhaust systems, catalytic converters, heat exchangers, furnace parts, architectural trim, and general industrial components in mild corrosive environments.
Equivalent Grades
EN 1.4512, UNS S40900, GB 022Cr11Ti, SUS409L
