904L (UNS N08904), also known as W.Nr. 1.4539, is a low-carbon super austenitic stainless steel. With the addition of copper, it exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to conventional chromium-nickel stainless steels (e.g., SS316L and SS317L). While its use in hydrochloric acid is limited, 904L demonstrates exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion in chloride solutions, and outstanding stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance. This steel is non-magnetic, offers excellent formability and weldability, and maintains good toughness at low temperatures.

Metallurgical Structure

904L has a fully austenitic structure and is less sensitive to ferrite and α-phase precipitation compared to other high-molybdenum austenitic stainless steels.

Corrosion Resistance Performance:

904L stainless steel exhibits outstanding corrosion resistance, capable of withstanding corrosive media such as acidic solutions, saline water, and chlorides. It performs exceptionally well in strong acids, strong alkalis, and high-chloride environments, demonstrating superior resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking (SCC).

Hot Working & Welding

Hot Forging: Maximum heating temperature: 1180°C; minimum forging temperature: ≥900°C.

Hot Forming: Can be performed within 1000-1150°C.

Heat Treatment: Annealing at 1100-1150°C, followed by rapid cooling.

Welding: 904L is suitable for various welding methods, with manual arc welding (MMA) and TIG welding being the most recommended.

Applications of 904L Stainless Steel:

904L stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance, heat resistance, low-temperature strength, and mechanical properties. It exhibits good hot workability (e.g., stamping, bending) without hardening during heat treatment.

Widely used in:

Household items (Type 1 & 2 cutlery)

Cabinets, indoor pipelines, water heaters

Boilers, bathtubs, automotive parts

Medical devices, construction materials

Chemical, food processing, agriculture, marine components

Is 904L a Duplex Steel?

Duplex steel (DP steel) consists of a two-phase microstructure of martensite, austenite, or bainite with a ferrite matrix. However, 904L is not a duplex steel but rather a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel. Despite this, its excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and superior mechanical properties make it a high-performance alternative in many applications.
