904L Stainless Steel Plate (UNS N08904 / 1.4539) is a super austenitic stainless steel, designated as 00Cr20Ni25Mo4.5Cu in China, corresponding to U.S. standard N08904 and German standard 1.4539. This material features a carbon content below 0.03%, with 18-20% chromium, 23-25% nickel, 3-4% molybdenum, and 4-5% copper, delivering exceptional corrosion resistance, particularly in dilute sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and chloride-rich environments, with resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting.
Weldability of 904L Stainless Steel
904L stainless steel plates are available in hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and precision-rolled types. At room temperature, they exhibit a tensile strength of 490 MPa, elongation of 35%, and a density of 8.24 g/cm³. They offer good weldability, supporting manual arc welding and gas-shielded welding, with no preheating required but localized temperatures must not exceed 100°C.
Machinability of 904L Stainless Steel
It has excellent cold-working properties, making it suitable for stamping and bending. It is widely used in petrochemical, seawater treatment, and flue gas desulfurization applications, including reactors, heat exchangers, and food processing equipment. Through optimized rolling and annealing processes, the comprehensive performance of thin plates can be enhanced to meet the needs of industries such as electronics and pharmaceuticals.

What is the difference in composition between 904L and 316L?
The core difference in composition between 904L and 316L stainless steel lies in the content of key alloying elements: As a super austenitic stainless steel, 904L contains 19-23% chromium, 23-28% nickel, 4-5% molybdenum, and 1-2% copper, with a carbon content of ≤0.02%; while 316L has a chromium content of 16-18%, nickel of 10-14%, molybdenum of 2-3%, contains no copper, and has a carbon content of ≤0.03%.
In comparison, the addition of high nickel, high molybdenum and copper in 904L makes it far superior to 316L in terms of corrosion resistance, especially in resisting strong acids and high chloride environments, but 316L has an advantage in cost.
