What is alloy 904L material?
Alloy 904L, also known as UNS N08904, is a superaustenitic stainless steel with high levels of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and copper, which provide excellent resistance to highly corrosive environments, including acids like sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and acetic acid, as well as chlorides and organic acids. Its ability to resist pitting corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and crevice corrosion makes it ideal for applications such as air pollution control systems, chemical and pharmaceutical processing, oil and gas equipment, and heat exchangers.
What is 904L stainless steel equivalent to?
904L stainless steel's equivalents are UNS N08904 (UNS), W.Nr. 1.4539 (German/DIN), and X1NiCrMoCu25-20-5 (Euronorm). Other equivalent grades include SUS 904L (JIS) and Z2 NCDU 25-20 (AFNOR). These designations refer to materials with a similar high-alloy composition and excellent corrosion resistance.

Corrosion Resistance
904L (UNS N08904, 1.4539) is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel. Its composition is approximately 20% chromium, 25% nickel, 4.0% molybdenum, and 1.5% copper, resulting in a pitting resistance equivalent value (PREN) of approximately 43. This steel was developed specifically for use in sulfuric acid environments, primarily with concentrations ranging from 20% to 85%.
Heat Resistance
904L is an austenitic stainless steel with a wider operating temperature range, allowing it to be used safely in applications below -50°C or above 250°C. At low temperatures, 904L maintains good impact toughness and does not form harmful intermetallic phases at high temperatures.
Stainless Steel 904l Vs 304
904l and 304 are contrasting stainless steel grades that can be differentiated by certain features. 904l SS is designed with a chemical content of max 23% chromium, max 28% nickel, and max 4% molybdenum. 304 grade on the contrary has a max of 20% chromium with 12% max nickel content.
The higher content of chromium, nickel coupled with the presence of molybdenum makes the 904l grade have superior corrosion resistance. The molybdenum content also gives this grade resistance to pitting by chlorides, which is not possible with the 304 grade.
SUS904L stainless steel plates are processed using advanced production equipment to ensure the precision and consistency of each plate. Our factory utilizes efficient tools such as laser cutting machines, CNC punching machines, and polishing equipment to process a wide range of stainless steel plate thicknesses, ranging from 0.3mm to 8mm, ensuring that our products meet international standards such as ASTM A240. Before shipment, each batch undergoes rigorous quality inspections, including surface finish, thickness tolerance, and dimensional accuracy, to ensure that the product meets customer requirements.Email: sales@gneestainless.com
